MELLS

The MELLS (Multi-Role Light Guided Missile System), known globally as SPIKE LR, has been a critical asset in the Bundeswehr for over a decade, and is replacing the older MILAN system. It is designed to successfully engage tanks, armored vehicles, fortified positions, and any other armored threats. Integrated with the Puma IFV, it’s deployable from tripods, vehicles, or helicopters. Usually operated by a three-person squad, it features fiber-optic guidance for engaging non-line-of-sight (NLOS) targets and “fire-and-forget” capability. Recently upgraded with SPIKE LR2 systems, more than 5.000 new missiles are set to be delivered in the coming years.

FAQ - MELLS

Q: How does MELLS improve battlefield effectiveness?

A: With its electro-optical guidance, fiber-optic data link, and multiple engagement modes, MELLS provides fire-and-forget or fire-and-observe capabilities, allowing operators to adjust targeting mid-flight and engage both direct and non-line-of-sight targets.

Q: Is MELLS interoperable with NATO forces?

A: Yes, MELLS is based on the SPIKE LR missile system, which is widely used across NATO member states. Its compatibility with modern battle management systems ensures seamless integration into allied operations.

Q: Why is it called MELLS?

A: It is called MELLS – Mehrrollenfähiges, leichtes Lenkflugkörpersystem für die Infanterie – because the Bundeswehr designates specific and unique names to any weapons systems they procure. Also SPIKE cannot be translated into Amtssprache correctly.
